China Roses and their Hybrids

Roses have grown in China since the dawn of time. It was only in the 18th century that these botanical treasures were revealed. The early china roses and their hybrids are still of great interest. Most are repeat flowering bushes. Few have much fragrance.

Annamarie de Montravel - 1880

Pure white flowers, fully double, globular and produced in great profusion. Has a scent reminscent of lily-of-the-valley. Makes a small sprawling bush of dense twiggy growth with small dark green leaflets. Can be grown in a pot. 60cm

Bloomfield Abundance - 1920

Sprays of tiny buds open to small rosette blooms of shell pink, produced throughout summer. Flowers are very similar to Cecile Brunner. Has a light scent. Can be grown as a large shrub or small climber. Tolerant of poor soil. To 1.8m.

Comtesse du Cayla - 1902

Loose semi-double blooms of orange and pink with red highlights. Fragrance reminiscent of sweet peas. A long flowering season. 1m.

Fabvier - 1832

Clusters of crimson flowers. Tolerant of poor soil. suitable for a pot or at the front of a border. Repeat flowers. To 90cm

Indica Major - ancient

An old shrub-climber. Soft blush-pink. First to flower in spring. Fragrant. Was used as a root stock so widely seen flourishing in old gardens. To 2.5m

Mme Jules Thibaud

Clusters of peachy pink double flowers, with a good repeat. Has some fragrance.To 1m.

Mutabilis - ancient

Also known as The Butterfly Bush as the bush can look like it is covered in butterflies. Single flowers change from buff, through pink to red. Has small crimson hips. Repeat flowers 10 months of the year. Can be grown as a shrub, a hedge or a small climber. tolerant of poor soil and shade. Grows to 1.5 to 2m.

Old Blush - 1789

Historically important as one of the four stud chinas. They were bred with the once flowering old european roses to produce the modern repeat flowering roses of today. This bush blooms for 10 months of the year with small, silvery pink cupped blooms. Has a sweet fragrance. tolerant of poor soil and shade. To 1.8m if left unpruned. Out of stock for 2012.

Perle d'Or - 1884

Yellow Cecile Brunner. Tiny apricot buds open to small honey-pink blooms with apricot tones. Good repeat flowerer. Has a light fragrance. Buds make good button holes. Small dark green leaflets on a delicate looking but tough bush. 1.2m.

Sophie's Perpetual - 1960

An old cultivar reintroduced for sale in 1960. Fragrant, globular flowers of pale blush pink overlaid with cerise, repeat flower. Dark green glossy foliage. Can be grown as a bush or small climber to 2m.
