Classic Bush & Shrub Roses

Many old roses grow to shrub proportions, rather than the modest size attained by modern bush roses. Unless otherwise noted expect the roses below to be informal shrubs that will attain 1.5m.

Alexander MacKenzie - 1984

Big shrub from the canadian 'Explorer' family. Free flowering double red blooms in clusters. Hardy. 2.5m.

Aloha - 1949

A shrub-climber used by David Austin in breeding his English roses. Deep reddish-pink blooms of many petals, strongly fragrant. Recurrent and healthy. Good cut flower. Tolerant of poor soil and some shade. 2m. A personal favourite.

Applejack -1973

Large semi-double rose-pink blooms, fragrant and free flowering. Forms a large shrub. Tolerant of poor soil. Bred in USA. 2.5m.

Belle Story - 1984

Very fragrant, pale pink flowers, with incurving petals and pronounced stamens. Repeat flowers. Has few thorns. 1.2m. Bred by Austin.

Bonica - 1981

Modern bush rose. Clear pink blooms in clusters. Very free-flowering. Light fragrance. Tolerant of poor soil. 90cm.

Dentelle de Malines - 1983

Trusses of blush-pink to white, cupped flowers. Light scent. Tolerant of shade. Summer flowering. 1.2m.

Ellen Willmott - 1936

Hybrid Tea. Large single flowers, with pronounced golden anthers framed by wavy petals of cream and pink, tinted a soft yellow. Has some fragrance. 1.2m.

Kirsten Poulsen - 1924

Cluster of single scarlet blooms with white eye. Vigorous and healthy bush with shiny foliage. Flowers most of the year. No scent. 1.2m.

La France - 1865

Hybrid Tea. Scented silver pink flowers. vigorous, fragrant and recurrent. The first hybrid tea. 1.2m.

Mary Guthrie - 1929

Fragrant, clusters of single cerise blooms with prominent gold stamens flower profusely. 1m. Bred by Clark.

Miss Edith Cavell - 1917

Polyantha. Clusters of small double crimson blooms. Tolerates shade. Good repeat. No scent. Named for Nurse Edith Cavell, born in Norfolk and reintroducedinto production by Peter Beales of the UK. 60cm

Multiflora Nana

An exquisite little bush, always in flower. Single starry soft pink blooms in clusters. Charming. Recommended as a hedge, where its upright growth is really suited. Tiny hips produced in autumn. 1m.

Pearl Drift - 1980

Large semi-double white blooms, with a touch of blush, repeat flowers. Has some fragrance. Tolerant of shade. 90cm.

Pink Sparrieshoop - 1953

Popular shrub-climber. Flat deep pink single blooms. Healthy free-flowering rose.

Shropshire Lass - 1968

Large almost single blooms of blush pink, with prominent gold stamens, that fade to white with age. Summer flowering. Has some fragrance. Tolerant of poor soil. Can be grown as a large shrub or small climber if left unpruned. Bred by Austin. 1.8m.

Sparkler - 1988

Nice clear white bush, always in flower, rain-tolerant. Suitable for planting in a pot or at the front of a border. No scent. 1m.

Squatter's Dream - 1923

Single fragrant medium yellow flowers with gold stamens. Bred by Clark. 1m.

Sunny South - 1918

A pink and white loosely formed bloom. Hybrid Tea. Bred by Alister Clark. 2m.

Whipped Cream - 1968

Miniature by Moore. Small white blooms flushed with cream produced in clusters. No scent. Very free flowering. 1m.

Yvonne Rabier -1910

Polyantha. Semi-double, very fragrant, pure white blooms produced in clusters. Attractive dark green glossy foliage. 1m.
