Ramblers

Wichuraiana ramblers are listed separately. Here are the rest which are mostly Multifloras, which haver fewer thorns than most. Ramblers often produce new growth from the base, have small blooms, in big clusters.

Adelaide d'Orleans - 1826

Pink buds open to clusters of small, double, blush-pink to white flowers, in profusion. A delicate primrose scent. Good on an arch or pergola. Can be grown through trees. Tolerant of poor soil and shade. Sempervirens rambler. 4.5m.

Aglaia - 1896

Yellow Rambler. Fragrant small semi-double, pale primrose yellow blooms fade to white. Tolerant of poor soil and shade. Relatively few thorns. Good on an arch. Named after one of the three Graces of Greek mythology. The others are Thalia and Euphrosyne. Used by Rev Pemberton to breed Hybrid Musk roses. 3.5m.

Astra Desmond - 1960

Previously known as White Flight.

Trusses of beautiful, fragrant, small semi-double flowers, off white to cream, freely produced in summer. Light green foliage. Tolerant of shade. Vigorous growth. Relatively few thorns. Good as a tree climber or on a large structure. 6m.

Donna Maria - 1830

Masses of pure white, fragrant, semi-double blooms much admired in Spring. Few thorns. Vigorous and healthy. Not well known but worth growing. 3m.

Dundee Rambler - c 1850

One of the Ayrshire Ramblers. White double blooms. Moderate fragrance. Tolerant of poor soil and shade. 6m.

Euphrosyne - 1895

Also known as the Pink Rambler. Dark pink buds open to very fragrant, small, double dark pink blooms that fade to a paler pink. Does best in some shade. Tolerant of poor soil. Vigorous growth. Relatively few thorns. Good on an arch or pillar. Named after one of the three Graces of Greek mythology. 3.5m.

Francis E Lester - 1946

Huge clusters of fragrant, single blooms, soft pink with white centres, reminscent of apple blossom, in Nov-Dec, followed by small red hips in autumn. A good one to grow through trees. Tolerant of some shade and poor soil. 4.5m

Ghislaine de Feligonde -1916

Clusters of gold blooms suffused with pink. Repeat flowering. Moderate fragrance. Relatively thornless. Tolerant of poor soil and some shade. Can be grown as a small climber or a large shrub. 2.5m

Goldfinch - 1907

Yellow buds open to soft yellow, semi-double blooms, that fade to cream in mid summer. Has a fruity fragrance. Best planted in light shade to retain more bloom colour. Tolerant of poor soil. good on a pergola or pillar. 2.5m.

Gruss an Zabern - 1904

Clusters of white, fragrant, double blooms in early summer. good on a pergola or pillar. 3m.

Kew Rambler - 1912

Pink buds open to clusters of small single pink blooms with a white eye and gold stamens, flowering in summer. Moderate fragrance. Has grey-green foliage and thorny stems. Good orange hips in autumn. Tolerant of shade. 5.5m

Mrs F W Flight - 1905

Large clusters of small semi-double rose-pink blooms. Good rose for a pillar or pergola - grows to 3m. Flowers profusely early in the season with few repeats.

Old Danish

Deep pink buds open to pale pink swirling blooms. Occasionally has swirls of dark pink on some blooms. Light green foliage. Sweet fragrance. Has a scrambling growth habit so good on a bank or can be trained to grow up fences. unknown heritage. To 2.5m

Paradise - 1907

Clusters of fragrant, single, pale pink blooms with silvery highlights in summer. Vigorous. Not to be confused with the modern Hybrid Tea of the same name. To 4m.

Phyllis Bide - 1923

Small rosette blooms of soft yellow, cream and pink, repeat flower continually throughout the season into autumn. Some fragrance. Few thorns. Tolerant of poor soil and some shade. 3m.

Princess Marie - 1829

Large cascading clusters of cupped blooms, pinkish-lilac. Tolerant of poor soil and some shade, Can be grown through trees. Sempervirens rambler. 4.5m.

Rose Marie Viaud - 1924

Seedling of Veilchenblau. Trusses of small, double purple blooms, flower in summer on arching canes. Relatively thornless. Tolerant of poor soil and shade. 4.5m.

Sandy Rambler

Soft pink large blooms. Summer flowering. A good one for along a fence. To 3.5m.

Thalia - 1895

Also known as White Rambler. Very fragrant, small, double, white blooms, flower in summer. Tolerant of poor soil and shade. Vigorous growth. Relatively few thorns. Good on an arch or pillar. Named after one of the three Graces of Greek mythology. 3.5m.

The Balmain

From Sydney's Balmain Gardens

Large single pink flowers, bloom in profusion in early summer. Some later repeat. Healthy and prickly. Good grown as a free standing arching shrub if you have plenty of space. To 3.5m.

Violette - 1921

Fragrant, small, double, violet blooms flower in summer on arching canes. Few thorns. Tolerant of poor soil and shade. Vigorous. Can be used to climb through trees. On structures, train canes horizontally to get better blooms. 4.5m.
