Gallica Roses

Oldest and most gracious of all the rose families, dating to pre-Christian days, developed by the French. Consistently the stars of our spring garden. Shrubby growth, strong colours, good fragrance. Crinkled matte foliage, not always very prickly. Tough roses which don't need to be sprayed. On their own roots will form informal thickets.

Anais Segales -1837

Early flowering. Arching big shrub, often found in old cemetries. Rich crimson-purple blooms fading to mauve. Strong fragrance. Does well in poor soil. 1m.

Complicata - old

Unknown origin. Vigorous arching branches carry wonderful single bright pink blooms, with gold stamens in early summer. Big hardy shrub, good hips. Can be grown as an informal hedge or as a specimen shrub. 1.8m.

Georges Vibert - 1853

Fragrant loosely double pale pink blooms that are striped. Stripe colour can vary from carmine to purple depending on climate. Stripes always present. Compact plant suitable for small gardens. 1.2m.

Ipsilante - 1821

Fully double, large, pale lilac-pink, quartered flowers. Intense fragrance. Named for the Greek Prince Alexander Ypsilante. 1.2m. Out of stock for 2012.

Nestor - c 1846

Double flat quartered flowers that are magenta with outer petals of lilac pink. Shades of colour vary with weather and soil. Light green foliage. Relatively thornless. Moderately fragrant. Makes a good cut flower. Tolerant of poor soil. 1.2m.

Tuscany Superb -1848

Semi double flowers, large and rich velvety dark red, with a golden crown of stamens when fully opened. Strongly perfumed. Few thorns. 1.2m. Out of stock for 2012.

Orpheline de Juillet pre-1836 Very fragrant. Flowers, large, double, crimson-purple shading to red in the centre. Upright growth. Tolerant of poor soil. 1.2m.
