Wichurana Ramblers

Wichuraiana ramblers were developed in the last century in France by Barbier and also in America. Healthy and with glossy foliage, they are mostly very fragrant, with thin pliable growth, and are capable of up to 4m or more. Great for fences or pergolas. they produce new healthy canes from the base.

Alberic Barbier - 1900

Butter-yellow buds open to creamy white muddled blooms flushed with lemon. Fragrance reminscent of apples. Flowers spectacualrly in spring and repeat flowers here into winter. has dark green glossy foliage and covers our barn. Very hardy. Grows well in windy Wellington and along the coast at Pukerua Bay. Highly recommended. To 6m.

Alexandre Girault -1909

This is Alexandre Girault in our garden.Clusters of deep rose-pink muddled blooms, flower in summer with some repeat through to winter. Apple fragrance. dark green glossy foliage. Tolerant of poor soil and shade. Ideal for a pergola. 800 are planted in Paris at Roseraie de l'Hay to great effect. 3.5m. Recommended.

American Pillar - 1909

Large trusses of single reddish-pink blooms with a white eye and gold stamens, pale to a deep pink. Summer flowering. Has a slight fragrance. dark green glossy foliage. Blooms on old wood. Tolerant of poor soil and some shade. Good for pergolas, pillars or climbing into trees. Can grow 6m.

Auguste Gervais -1918

Fragrant, double, coppery-yellow blooms with slamon highlights fade to creamy-white in summer. Tolerant of poor soil. Ideal for a pergola or over fences. 3.5m.

Aviateur Bleriot - 1910

Trusses of moderately fragrant, double soft orange-yellow blooms fade to cream. Summer flowering. Dark green glossy foliage. Tolerant of poor soil. 3.5m.

Bloomfield Courage - 1925

Large clusters of small, single dark velvety-red blooms with a white eye, hide the foliage in summer. Some repeat flowering in autumn followed by scarlet hips. relatively few thorns. Needs plenty of room. can be used as a tree climber or to cover an arch. 4m+.

Blushing Lucy - 1938

Spectacular clusters of moderately fragrant, small, clear pink double blooms in late summer. Comes into its own when other ramblers have finished flowering. Vigorous and easy to grow. Ideal for a pergola. Highly recommended. 4m.

Crimson Showers - 1951

Pendulous clusters of small, crimson, pompon blooms in summer. The trailing stems make it ideal for a pergola. Tolerant of poor soil and some shade. A vigorous grower. A seedling of Excelsa. 4.5m.

Dorothy Perkins - 1902

Large clusters of small fragrant double rose-pink blooms flower in summer. Glossy dark green leaves. Tolerant of poor soil. Can grow up to 6m.

Edmond Proust - 1903

Clusters of fragrant, pale pink, fully double blooms with dark pink centres, flower in summer and have some repeat. Glossy foliage. Ideal for a pergola. Originally misnamed here as May Queen. 3.5m.

Evangeline - 1906

Huge clusters of single soft pinkish-white blooms. Like apple blossom. Has a slight fragrance. Likes to climb trees and does well in shade. 4.5m

Francois Foucard - 1900

Yellow buds open to trusses of fragrant, double lemon-yellow blooms that fade to white in late spring/early summer. This is a wichuraiana/noisette cross. Grows to 3.5m.

Francois Juranville - 1906

Double, clear pink blooms flower over a long period in summer, repeats intermittently. apple fragrance. Good as a tree climber or on a pergola. Tolerant of poor soil and shade. 4.5m.

Frau Albert Hochstrasser - 1908

Clusters of fragrant, small, double white blooms with pink and yellow undertones, flower in spring/summer with some later repeat. 3m.

Gardenia - 1899

Pointed yellow buds open to moderately fragrant creamy white flowers with yellow centres. Stays yellow if planted in the shade. Good on an arch, pergola or up a tree. Reaches 6m.

Lady Gay -1905

Spectacular clusters of fragrant, small, mid-pink double blooms in summer. Good on structures, pergolas etc. 4m.

Mme Alice Garnier - 1906

Clusters of fragrant, small, soft orange-pink double blooms in summer. Tolerant of poor soil and some shade. Good on structures, pergolas etc or can be grown as a ground cover. 4m.

Paul Transon - 1900

Attractive, medium sized, fully double slamon-pink blooms. Apple fragrance. Spectacular spring flush with intermittent repeat if placed in a warm position. Good on structures, pergolas etc. 3m. A favourite of ours.

Primevere - 1929

Large double primrose to canary yellow flowers, slightly fragrant, produced in spring. Nice dark green glossy foliage. Very strong grower. 4m

Purity - 1917

Large double blooms of pure white, fragrant and unaffected by rain. Summer flowering with some repeat into autumn here. Tolerant of poor soil and some shade. good on structures, pergolas etc. a strong grower. 3.5m.

Sanders White - 1912

Clusters of very fragrant, small, white, rosette blooms in summer, looks attractive against the dark green glossy foliage. Tolerant of poor soil and shade. very versatile. Good on fences or can be used as a tree climber or for ground cover. 3.5m Recommended.

Shower of Gold - 1910

Small golden-yellow rosette blooms fade to pale lemon yellow, and then cream. It has a big flush in spring/summer and intermittently repeats through to autumn. Has a slight fragrance. The trailing canes are thornless but there are small prickles at the backs of the dark green glossy leaves. We grow it up a post and along a rope - good for a pergola. 3.5m. Recommended.

Weetwood - 1983

A seedling from Debutante, this strong rambler will achieve 7m. Large trusses of medium sized soft pink rosette blooms. Slight fragrance. Blooms have my favourite packed with petals look.
